Workshop: Rationality frameworks for conditionals
نویسنده
چکیده
This workshop brings together philosophers and psychologists and fo-cuses on investigating conditionals from formal and empirical points of views. The topics (listed in alphabetical order) include but are not restricted to: • causality and conditionals • conditional structures • experimental paradigms for conditionals • learning conditionals (i.e., conditionalizing on conditionals) • probabilistic approaches to conditionals • quantitative and qualitative approaches to conditionals • ranking theory and conditionals • simulation studies on conditionals Funding This workshop is generously supported by the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (70% of the travelling and hotel costs as well as lunch and dinner on the workshop day; Alexander von Humboldt Foundation). The coordination project of the SPP1516 (German Research Foundation) contributes 30% of the travelling and hotel costs.

Formal Epistemology and the New Paradigm Psychology of Reasoning
This position paper advocates combining formal epistemology and the new paradigm psychology of reasoning in the studies of conditionals and reasoning with uncertainty. The new paradigm psychology of reasoning is characterized by the use of probability theory as a rationality framework instead of classical logic, used by more traditional approaches to the psychology of reasoning. This paper pres...
متن کاملNiki Pfeifer Reasoning about uncertain conditionals
There is a long tradition in formal epistemology and in the psychology of reasoning to investigate indicative conditionals. In psychology, the propositional calculus was taken for granted to be the normative standard of reference. Experimental tasks, evaluation of the participants’ responses and psychological model building, were inspired by the semantics of the material conditional. Recent emp...
متن کاملCounterfactuals, indicative conditionals, and negation under uncertainty: Are there cross-cultural differences?
In this paper we study selected argument forms involving counterfactuals and indicative conditionals under uncertainty. We selected argument forms to explore whether people with an Eastern cultural background reason differently about conditionals compared to Westerners, because of the differences in the location of negations. In a 2× 2 between-participants design, 63 Japanese university student...
متن کاملBiconditionals and “biconditional probability” in reasoning
Conditionals play crucial roles in human reasoning. They represent rules, causal relationship, and explicit inference. Psychology of reasoning, from its inception, has been studying how humans use and understand conditionals. One prominent feature of humans’ conditionals is that it does not follow the pattern of the standard model of conditionals. In classical logic, the corresponding connectiv...
متن کاملThe new psychology of reasoning: A mental probability logical perspective
Mental probability logic (MPL) has been proposed as a competence theory of human inference. MPL interprets indicative conditionals as conditional events. While recent probabilistic approaches assume an uncertain relation between the premises and the conclusion, the consequence relation remains deductive in MPL. The underlying rationality framework of MPL is coherence based probability logic. I ...
